SMITH RESIDENCE
This Italianate villa was built in central Maine during the late 1920’s and served as a summer residence for a New York publisher and his family. Up until the time the property was purchased by our clients in 1995, it had been vacant for several years after being used as a ‘safe house’ for the FBI. The main house and its several outbuildings, including a large stone cottage and a boathouse, required extensive structural repairs and renovations. We worked with the new owners to prepare a 3-year master plan for the repairs and renovations.
Work included reconfiguration of the main house interior, the installation of new heating, plumbing and electrical systems, a new kitchen and new bathrooms. We also helped the clients to research and revitalize the award-winning gardens descending from the portico to the water’s edge. These photos show an arbor that was designed and built to complete the first phase of the project.
